Businessman hacked dead | The Daily Star

A leader of a business association, who was injured in an attack in Kamalganj upazila on Sunday afternoon, died in a hospital in Sylhet the same night.

The victim, Nazmul Islam, 34, a businessman in the computer hardware industry, was president of the Chaitraghat Traders Association in upazila.

Kamalganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Eardous Hasan cited locals as saying a group of criminals, armed with sharp weapons, attacked Nazmul on his way to his hardware store at Chaitraghat Bazar Sunday afternoon.

At one point, the gang hacked into Nazmul indiscriminately and then cut off both of his legs before running away, leaving him critically injured.

Hearing Nazmul’s call for help, people nearby came to the scene, rescued him and rushed him to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital, from where he was then transferred to Sylhet Women Medical College Hospital as her condition deteriorated, the CO added.

Nazmul succumbed to his injuries the same night while being treated there.

Furthermore, as the injured Nazmul was taken to hospital, he mentioned the names of at least four of the attackers in the video captured from his cell phone, he added, adding that the youngster businessman could have been killed out of personal enmity.

The OC (investigation) of the Sohel Rana police station said that Nazmul’s brother, who was killed, had filed a complaint with the police station accusing 14 people including a Jewel Ahmed, 40, from the same area.

Notable, Jewel and Nazmul had a personal feud over establishing supremacy among local traders and Jewel was seriously injured in an attack allegedly carried out by Nazmul and his men about a year and a half ago.
