Court orders doctor’s arrest over ‘affair’ with businessman’s wife

A court in the upper region of Jos issued a warrant for the arrest of a doctor, Michael Owoicho-Odeh, on Friday.

Maduabuchi Orji, a Jos-based businessman, has accused former staff of Jos University Hospital (JUTH) of having an illicit affair with his wife.

The judge, Lawan Suleiman, gave the order when told that the accused was again absent, NAN reports.

Suleiman said the court cannot tolerate any form of disrespect “when a defendant willfully refuses to appear and is constantly absent.”

He confirmed the argument of the prosecution lawyer that the bond previously granted to the defendant should be withdrawn.

“I hereby order that a warrant for the arrest of the defendant be issued and that he appear in this court on the next adjourned date.”

Muleng Alex, the legal officer of the Plateau Police Command had requested the court to revoke the doctor’s bail.

“The defendant and his surety deliberately refused to appear for the rest of the case. The court should not allow them to ransom us,” she said.

Defense attorney Joseph Danboyi explained that his client was currently taking an exam.

But the judge overruled his objection and adjourned the case until June 13 for further hearing.

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has suspended Owoicho-Odeh for six months for malpractice and infamous conduct.

The Disciplinary Tribunal for Doctors and Dentists, made up of five members, announced the sanction to Jos on March 23.
