ED chargesheets businessman Ranchi for allegedly embezzling Rs 53 crore intended for lunchtime meal

The Enforcement Branch had arrested Sanjay Kumar Tiwary under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act on November 23, 2021.

The ED has filed a lawsuit under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act against businessman Sanjay Kumar Tiwary for allegedly misappropriating funds intended for the midday meal at Ranchi.

The Law Enforcement (ED) Directorate has filed a complaint under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act against Ranchi-based real estate businessman Sanjay Kumar Tiwary for allegedly misappropriating funds to the tune of over Rs 53 crore earmarked for the midday meal at Ranchi.

The ED had initiated the money laundering investigation based on a registered FIR on the complaint of Ranchi branch of State Bank of India against Sanjay Kumar Tiwary, managing partner of Bhanu Construction and others .

Officials alleged that around Rs 100 crore was credited “by mistake” to Bhanu Construction’s account by the State Bank of India. This amount belonged to Jharkhand Rajya Madhayan Bhojan Pradhikaran (Lunch Meal).

“Sanjay Kumar Tiwary deliberately and knowingly misappropriated and transferred the amount of Rs 53.38 crore to various accounts of Bhanu Construction and his associates resulting in undue gain to them and corresponding loss to State Bank of India,” said the ED in a statement.

Previously, the Law Enforcement Directorate arrested Sanjay Kumar Tiwary under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act on November 23, 2021.

The emergency then carried out searches at several locations in the Jharkhand Ranchi.

“During these searches, various incriminating documents and digital evidence were found and seized along with the five vehicles,” the ED statement added.

Sanjay Kumar Tiwary is currently in police custody.
